Bound to a 500-year tradition

A hearty welcome to Hotel & Spa Klosterbräu in Seefeld in Tyrol where history, hospitality at the highest level and exceptional cosiness come together to make a perfect blend.

Hotel Klosterbräu boasts a long history dating back to the year 1516 when the Monastery of “Sevelt” was erected on the site of today’s Tyrolean extra-class hotel. For six generations, the Seyrling family has been placing the entire focus on pampering its demanding guests. The centuries-old structure of the building has been preserved in its original state and modern-day comforts of a five-star hotel have been added. This way, the hotel’s charm and uniqueness have been retained.

History of the monastery

In the second half of the 14th century the knight Oswald der Milser lived on a hill near Seefeld. He was a proud and aggressive man who had the devotional abbot of Stams Konrad Speiser arrested by force in 1376.

The hand-written report of Saint Petrus Canisius described the miracle with the following words:

“On Maundy Thursday of the year 1376 the knight Oswald der Milser came to the church of Seefeld during the Easter Communion and demanded to get a host the same size as normal hosts. The small host wasn’t enough for him. The priest was scared and acted as he was told.

However, when the priest gave him the sacrament, that means a large host, god’s will prevailed. The hard rock on which the altar was set moved and the ground opened as if it wanted to swallow the knight alive. Oswald was terribly frightened as the earth had already swallowed him up to his feet and he wanted to cling to the altar - he desperately reached for it with his right hand. However, as soon as the knight touched the stone, it turned as soft as wax and the impressions of his fingers can still be seen on the altar today. The altar even pushed slightly against him.

The host however had turned bloody the moment his tongue had touched it. The priest took the host out of his mouth again.

As a result, many pilgrims came to Seefeld to marvel at the place of the miracle. This marked the beginning of “tourism” – and Hotel Klosterbräu, which was built by Emperor Maximilian I as of the year 1516.

For six generations (since 1809), the Seyrling family has been placing the entire focus on pampering its demanding guests. The centuries-old structure of the building has been preserved in its original state and modern-day comforts of a five-star hotel have been added.
