The host miracle of Seefeld

The beginning of tourism in Seefeld in Tirol

In the second half of the 14th century the knight Oswald der Milser lived on a hill near Seefeld. He was a proud and aggressive man who had the devotional abbot of Stams Konrad Speiser arrested by force in 1376.

The hand-written report of Saint Petrus Canisius described the miracle with the following words:

“On Maundy Thursday of the year 1316 the knight Oswald der Milser came to the church of Seefeld during the Easter Communion and demanded to get a host the same size as normal hosts. The small host wouldn’t be enough for him. The priest was scared and acted as he was told.

However when the priest gave him the sacrament, that means a large host, god’s will prevailed. The hard rock on which the altar was set moved and the ground opened as if it wanted to swallow the knight alive. Oswald was terribly frightened as the earth had already swallowed him up to his feet and he wanted to cling to the altar, he desperately reached for the altar with his right hand. However as soon as the touched the stone it turned as soft as wax and the impressions of his fingers can still be seen on the altar today. The altar even pushed against him.

The host however had turned bloody the moment his tongue had touched it. The priest took the host out of his mouth.

Dorothea of Starkenberg, the knight’s wife, did not want to trust her ears when she heard what had happened. Full of pride and blindness she screamed: “I’d rather believe that roses blossomed on this barren trunk …” As soon as she had said this, three roses began to grow on the trunk. The lady was scared and went crazy, so she fled to the wilderness of the mountains where she finally died. Oswald Milser retired to the Monastery of Stams where he lived as a penitent and died after two years.”

After that, many pilgrims came to Seefeld to marvel at the place of the miracle. This was the beginning of tourism – and Hotel Klosterbräu’s history.
